The breakout for Steen is waiting for 2007-2008.

I originally thought 2006-2007 was going to be a breakout season for Alex Steen. He unfortunately got off to a very slow start, but it was not entirely his fault. As we have seen throughout this season, Steen is an offensive player. Maurice used him in an entirely defensive role, playing beside Michael Peca on that checking third line. The last half of 06-07 has shown much promise for Steen, as his offensive hockey abilities have started to creep through. Was he trying too hard? I think he was. He was trying to produce offense when not given the proper chance. Trying to score is difficult. You have to let it happen. Ice time and pressure situations lend a hand to scoring, and Steen has stepped up to that challenge in the last half of the NHL season. Steen has also shown he has grit, as he has started to throw his body around more and more. While still small in stature compared to many other players in the league, it is good to see the willingness to sacrifice in order to win. Next season, being 2007-2008, Alex Steen is going to step up and be one of the strongest offensive players on the team. Just wait and see.

During the 2007-2008 pre-season, Alex Steen has looked very good. He put up 3 points in 6 games, but had 25 shots on goal. This puts him second overall in the league during the pre-season. He needs to find his scoring touch, and if he can, this season could be the breakout season I called for. Let’s wait and see!

Still waiting…. Steen just scored his 4th goal of the season. That’s right. Only 4. It seems, at least so far, that I may be incorrect in thinking he was going to break out this year. Still a lot of games to play though, so we’ll let this one go on for a bit.
