GAME 78: MAR. 31 2007, Pittsburgh Penguins @ Toronto Maple Leafs

Well my predictions were not to be. I predicted the final outcome to be 4-2 with Mats Sundin getting his two goals to tie and break the teams all-time goal scoring record. The 4-2 score looked like it was going to hold up until Pittsburgh bombarded the Maple Leafs with shot after shot in the third period. As it turns out, the final score was 5-4 Leafs, in overtime. Tomas Kaberle was the Player of the Game, potting 2 goals, including the OT winner.

The Leafs’ overall effort was good, with strong offensive and defensive play. Andrew Raycroft was great in net prior to the Pittsburgh onslaught, keeping the lead for the Leafs intact. Crosby was a relative non-factor, and Mats Sundin did get in on the scoring with 2 assists. He needs to get this record before the regular season runs out, so if they make the playoffs, he can have the monkey off his back.

When the score was 4-1, you could see the classic Leaf breakdown and opposition come back, bringing back recent memories of a Buffalo game. It was nice to see, for a change, a Leaf overtime win instead of a shootout loss. This shows us that our Leafs can step it up when it counts, we just need to see it more.
