Game 8, Sept. 29: Last chance for Toskala to impress

This is it. This was the last chance for Toskala to impress the team, the coaches, and most importantly, Leafs Nation. This game was actually the last chance for all the young kids to impress, and possibly earn a spot on the opening day roster. The most important player for all of us was Vesa Toskala.

The first period was great; Toskala made some great saves and the kids were skating very well with Detroit. Detroit played most of their main roster, and the fact that the team was playing well was a great start.

It all fell apart from there. Detroit started scoring their goals, and the kids could not keep up. They were behind, and desperation to even the score started to take it’s toll on the team. Some missed defensive assignment later, and the final was 4-0 for Detroit.

Toskala ends up 0-3-0 in the pre-season, and this has all Maple Leafs fans dooming the season before it starts.

The question now is: who starts opening day? Arguments can be made for both goalies, but it seems the arguments for Raycroft are a little stronger. Raycroft played a bit better and tucked two wins under his belt. He also lost a game in OT. He has looked comfortable in net, and the team has played relatively well in front of him. Toskala on the other hand is the exact opposite. He has all 3 of the team’s regular time losses. He has looked shaky and uncomfortable, and the team has not looked good in front of him. But, he has the contract.

My money is on Toskala starting, because of the money. Now we wait and see on Wednesday against Ottawa. Oh boy.
