Game 14: Madden scores shorthanded to ruin Leafs’ night

The Leafs are hoping the road brings some wins. Winning this game in New Jersey will give them a much needed 2 points going into 3 straight division games on the road. The Leafs come in with a very good recent history against the Devils. The Maple Leafs are one of two teams (Vancouver being the other) that Brodeur has a losing record against.
The game is played tight, just like most games against New Jersey. The first two periods see these teams trade a goal each. David Clarkson scores for New Jersey in the first and Steen scores for the Maple Leafs in the second. The third period sees both teams lock up defensively, but still trade offensive chances. The Leafs go on the power play at 14:40 of the third, and have a prime opportunity to take the lead in this game. Ian White blows a defense assignment and John Madden goes to ice the puck. His teammates yell for him to enter the zone. He listens, skates in on the left wing side and snaps a shorthanded goal over Toskala’s stick side.
This goal took all wind out of the Leafs. The Devils added one more goal in the third. Before it was all over Sundin scored a backhander with 32 seconds to go, but it was a case of ‘too little too late’.
