Game 27: Leafs topple Pens for two in a row

Get Yonge Street ready for the parade! The Leafs have won two in a row!

But really… while the Stanley Cup parade is still light years away, it is good to see this Maple Leafs squad put together a couple good games. They couldn’t have played this one better either.

This game saw two of our Maple Leafs break slumps. Mark Bell scored his first of the season, and his first as a Maple Leaf at 3:56 of the opening frame. Paul Maurice placed him on the top line with Sundin and Antropov (a weird move when looking at his scoring slump), and it payed dividends.

Toronto out-shot Pittsburgh 14 - 9 in period one, but only had one goal. One point of note, Ex-Leaf Gary Roberts got a 2 minute roughing penalty, then yapped at the referee for 2 more on an Unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. Unfortunately the Leafs could not capitalize. Their power play woes continue.

The second period started with a flurry. Both teams were skating end to end in what looked like a mini pond hockey game. But at 2:01, Wellwood and Blake broke free for an uncontested 2 on 0 rush. Wellwood took his time, made sure Blake was ready, slid the biscuit over to him, and Blake popped it over Fleury’s right shoulder. FINALLY! 18 games without a goal. Blake looked relieved, and gave Welly an extra ‘thank you’.

The Leafs seemed sparked by Blake’s goal. Not much happened on the score sheet in this regard, but their play was solid, especially their defense. Nik Antropov and Alexei Ponikarovsky also got tallies for the Buds, while Pittsburgh did manage to score two goals to make the game a 4 - 2 win for the Maple Leafs.

The Leafs have a mini win streak going on here. While 2 games is not much in the grand scheme of things, Leafs Nation can rest easy for the moment.
