Game 30: Leafs just can’t seem to beat Boston

Well, just as the title of this post says, our boys just can’t seem to beat the Boston Bruins. After 4 straight decisive victories, the Maple Leafs lose their game plan and get beat.

The Leafs got their shots at net, out-shooting the Bruins in the second and third periods, and overall, but could only find the back of the net once. Considering the up-side-down nature of the Leafs, the goal scorer comes as no surprise. The Leafs play well for 4 straight, and get goals from all over the roster. The Leafs play poorly, and get a goal from Jason Blake. The way Blake has been going, this should have inspired the rest of the Leafs team.

The Leafs looked dead. They looked tired and slow. The Bruins were playing an excellent trap system which seemed to work very well. Have the Maple Leafs not practiced offense against this type of defensive system? It doesn’t seem like they have.

The Leafs started out by trying to skate the puck into the offensive zone, but it never worked. It past years they kept trying failing methods, so I give them credit for switching it up. They started dumping it at the line. This didn’t work either. In order to dump the puck and be successful, you have to get into the zone and chase the puck. It didn’t seem like any Leaf was on the same page. They dumped it, Boston always got to it first, and threw it back out.

This game seemed like a defensive NHL team playing an offensively-challenged AHL team. If the other teams in the league get a whiff of this one, which I am sure they will, they will learn how to decisively beat the Leafs each and every time.

On a lighter note, it was nice to see the fans continue to cheer for Wade Belak.
