Sundin decision still in the air

Well as everyone can see it has been a while since I have last written a post. A little bitterness, a little sadness… but here we go again.

Sundin still hasn’t made a decision on what he is going to do. He has recently stated that he is not going to make a decision until the Leafs GM post (and maybe coach) has been sorted out. Makes sense, but still leaves fans unsatisfied.

The general thought throughout the media is that he will be signing with another team. Apparently Montreal is making a push towards him, and rumour has it that Detroit is also interested. If Sundin walks away from the Leafs to sign with another team… what does that say about the 2008 Trade Deadline and his unwillingness to waive his no-trade clause? If Sundin signs somewhere else, the Leafs get nothing for their long-time captain, when we could have had a start on the rebuilding process.

Fans are split on this one. On one hand, you have people that say he was well within his right to stay. And he was, that can not be denied. On the other hand, some fans think he screwed the team out of a chance we won’t have again. All things considered, if he walks, he did screw the team. He had his chance to help the Maple Leafs, and he let it fly out the door.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, Mats Sundin is my all-time favourite player. But even this leaves a bitter taste in my mouth. If Sundin joins another team this off-season, my feelings towards him will be tarnished.

We will know soon enough. Maybe the stars will align, a coach and GM that likes Sundin will be signed, and Mats will come onboard (for less money) and help guide the youth of this team for another year. Or maybe he will be wearing a Habs jersey next year. That would be a heartbreak for many fans.
