Wellwood waived, Vancouver waves back

The Toronto Maple Leafs have waived Maple Leafs forward Kyle Wellwood on Tuesday (June 24), along with Andrew Raycroft. While Raycroft has since been bought out by the Leafs (what, no suitors out there?!), Wellwood was picked up off the waiver wire less than 24 hours later by the Vancouver Canucks. Good for him, but good for Vancouver? A lot of people may say so, but I think Wellwood’s issues will continue. Here is a quote from the Canucks website, in an article written by Jeff Patterson:

The Canucks want Wellwood to take the remainder of the summer to rest-up so that when training camp rolls around he’s happy – and more importantly healthy – and ready to show that he deserves a spot on one of the team’s top two lines.

Isn’t ‘taking the summer off’ one of the reasons the Leafs didn’t want to keep him? If he rests all summer, his condition is going to dip again, and the Canucks will realize they just picked up a nagging injury, not a top 6 player (as he see’s himself). “I looked at their roster and I’m just hoping that I can come in and play like a top six forward,” Wellwood said. “That’s where I’d like to be and be able to get those kinds of minutes.”

Yeah, we’ll see.

Wellwood started the season with Vancouver. The Canucks then promptly waived him for the same reasons the Leafs did. Am I telepathic?

Good news for Wellwood… with the recent injuries to the Canucks, Wellwood got called up. He then scored a PP goal and assisted on another. Good for him. Maybe his second stint on the waiver wire with no interest from other teams taught him a lesson. Maybe.
